Lipodissolve / Mesotherapy

Every so many years another “magic” treatment is marketed as the non-surgical solution to rejuvenation or weight loss. Lipodissolve and Mesotherapy both involve the injection of caustic material to essentially melt or destroy the fat under your skin. We would like to highlight once again the risk / benefit ratio which you have to consider when undertaking any plastic surgery procedure. In the case of Lipodissolve and Mesotherapy, the risks of skin pigmentation, lumpiness, contour deformity, unevenness, infection, and skin necrosis far outweigh any potential benefits. The procedures are currently under further investigation. But for now, they are not recommended in anyone.

  1. Unsatisfactory results
The most common complaint after Mesotherapy is dissatisfaction with the results. Patients typically state that the results were not as extensive as promised. Revision liposculpture is the perfect option in such patients. Though more challenging than non-operated tissues, the residual excess fat can be simply removed and a beautiful figure sculpted with liposuction using a very fine cannula.

  2. Darkened skin
Unlike standard liposuction, the caustic chemicals which are injected to dissolve the fat in Mesotherapy or Lipodissolve are not specific to fat. These chemicals burn any tissue they come into contact with. They can easily destroy or inflame the deeper layers of the skin causing enough irritation to induce a change in pigmentation. This is particularly the case in people with slightly darker or Mediterranean skin. Lasers may be an option in treating such pigmentation changes, but there is no perfect solution or treatment.

  3. Unevenness
As the injected chemicals are inexact, it is difficult to remove excess fat in an even distribution. Unevenness or lumpiness are both extremely common with Mesotherapy or Lipodissolve. Revision of these problems includes liposuction to even the results and correct any bulges or dimples which may have resulted.

  4. Residual excess fat
Probably the easiest of the problems to address, residual excess fat can be corrected by another liposculpture procedure. Second-time-around liposuction is a bit more difficult than the first time, but excellent results are typical.

  5. Poor contour
Most physicians who are practicing these forms of non-surgical fat removal are not surgeons. Other problems aside, the complication of a contour deformity is purely a function of artistic ability. Revision of such contour irregularities and simply a poor shape to the body after Mesotherapy or Lipodissolve involves meticulous sculpting with liposuction (liposculpture). The fat is removed carefully using a very small cannula to assure the best results possible.
