Rippling
If you can visualize some ripples on your breast, odds are you do not have much breast tissue over the ripples. In women with adequate breast tissue, your natural breast tissue with cover and camouflage the ripples in the implants making them invisible. To treat visible ripples, implants which are over the muscle should be switched to under the muscle as the chest muscle (pectoralis) will act as an extra layer covering the implant. If your implants are already under the muscle and you still have visible ripples, surgical options include insertion of Alloderm (cadaveric skin) over the area of ripples. Another option which is currently under investigation and not yet generally recommended is fat injection into the breast tissue over the ripples. The injected fat will plump-up the breast tissue and aid it in camouflaging the implants. Concerns exist over the possibility of the injected fat causing confusion on future mammography about possible breast cancer. We are all waiting to see what the long-term outcome will be in the group of patients under investigation.
