Most surgeons believe that breast implants placed under the pectoralis muscle on the chest produce the best results. The pectoralis muscle helps to flatten the top of the implants, therefore minimizing a noticeable step-off or bulge at the top of the breasts. Research studies have also shown that breast implants in the sub-muscular position (under the muscle) have a slightly lower chance of capsular contracture (firmness of the implants) over time. For these reasons, most implants these days are placed in a pocket deep to the pectoralis muscle.
Other surgeons feel that they accomplish excellent results without the need for placing the implants under the muscle. Implants placed over the muscle also avoid risks of animation deformities. Animation deformities to breast implants are rippling, movement of the implant or depressions that occur when the pectoralis muscle is contracted during activity. It can take anything from subtle activities during the day in some women to strenuous activities during sports or exercise in other women to create animation deformities. We highly recommend you come in for a consultation to discuss your particular preferences and look forward to guiding you through the decision making process.
